Kyoto University

Kyoto University (京都大学 Kyōto daigaku ), or Kyodai (京大 Kyōdai ) is really a national university located in Kyoto, Japan. It‘s the second oldest Japanese university, 4 perhaps one of the highest ranked universities in Asia and one among Japan's National Seven Universities. One among Asia’s leading research-oriented institutions, Kyoto University is famed for producing world-class researchers, including ten Nobel Prize laureates, two Fields medalists you Gauss Prize. The university is consistently ranked the next best institute in Japan since 2008 in various independent university ranking schemes. 

The forerunner from the Kyoto University was the Chemistry School founded in Osaka in 1869, which, despite its name, taught physics also. (舎密 is really a transcription of the Dutch word chemie. ) Later, the Third Higher School was established inside the spot where Seimi-kyoku in 1886, it then transferred towards the university's present main campus in a similar year. 

Kyoto Imperial University as an important aspect of the Imperial University system was established on June 18, 1897, by using the Third Higher School's buildings. The higher school moved to some patch of land just over the street, in which the Yoshida South Campus stands today. In a similar year from the university's establishment, the College of Science and Technology was founded. The College of Law and also the College of Medicine were founded in 1899, the College of Letters in 1906, expanding the university's activities to areas outside natural science. 

After World War II, the current Kyoto University was established by merging the imperial university and also the Third Higher School, which assumed the duty training liberal arts like the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The faculty was dissolved using the foundation from the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies in 1992. 

Kyoto University has since 2004 been incorporated like a national university corporation under a brand new law which relates to all national universities. 

Regardless of the incorporation that has resulted in increased financial independence and autonomy, Kyoto University remains partly controlled from the Japanese Ministry of Education. 

The University's Department of Geophysics and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute are both represented upon the national Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction. 

The university has three campuses in Yoshida, Kyoto ; in Gokashō, Uji ; and in Katsura, Kyoto. 

Yoshida Campus is that the main campus, with some laboratories located in Uji. The Graduate School of Engineering happens to be under process of moving towards the newly built Katsura Campus. 

The university has about 22,000 students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs.
