University of Melbourne

University of Melbourne (UniMelb or Melbourne University) was founded by Hugh Childers, the Auditor General and the Minister of Finance, in his first Budget Speech on November 4, 1852, which set aside some £ 10,000 for the establishment of a university. The University was established by the Act of Incorporation on January 22, 1853, with the power to grant degrees in the arts, medicine, law and music. The act provided for an annual contribution of £ 9,000, while a special grant £ 20,000 was made for the building of it. The foundation stone was laid on July 3, 1854, and on the same day the foundation stone for the State Library Classes began in 1855 with three professors and sixteen students; The student body, only four passed. The original building was officially opened by the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria, Sir Charles Hotham, on October 3, 1855. The first Chancellor, Redmond Barry (later Sir Redmond), served until his death in 1880.

The inauguration of the university was made possible by the wealth generated from the Victorian gold rush. This institution was designed to be "the influence of civilization" on a fast turnaround time and commercial growth.

University 150th anniversary was celebrated in 2003.

The main campus is located in Parkville Melbourne, a suburb of northern part of the central business district of Melbourne, with several other campuses located across Victoria. Melbourne is a sandstone university and member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872 various residential colleges have become affiliated with the university. There are 12 colleges located on the main campus and in the nearby suburb offers academic, sports and cultural programs along Melbourne accommodation for students and faculty.

Melbourne consists of 11 separate academic units and is associated with various institutes and research centers, including the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and the Grattan Institute. Among the 15 school graduates Melbourne Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Medical School are highly respected.

Four prime minister of Australia and five governors-general have graduated from Melbourne. Seven Nobel Prize winners have been students or lecturers, most Australian universities.
