University of Kansas


The University of Kansas (KU) is a public research university and the oldest and largest public university in the state of Kansas. The university opened in 1866, under a statute that provided by the Kansas Legislature in 1864 following the enabling legislation was passed in 1863 under the Kansas Constitution.

KU campus is located in Lawrence, Wichita, Overland Park, Salina, and Kansas City, Kansas, with the main campus located in Lawrence on Mount Oread, the highest location in Lawrence. University Medical Center and University Hospital located in Kansas City, Kansas. The Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kansas, in the Kansas City metropolitan area. There are also sites of education and research at Parsons and Topeka, and a branch of the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita and Salina.

Registration at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses are 23 597 students in the fall of 2014; additional 3,371 students are enrolled at KU Medical Center for a total enrollment of 26 968 students in three campuses. Overall university employs 2,663 faculty members in the fall of 2012.

The University of Kansas large state-sponsored universities, with five campuses. KU features of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, which includes the School of Arts and the School of Public Affairs and Administration; and the School of Architecture, Design & Planning; Business; education; engineering; Health Professions; Journalism and Mass Communication; law; Treatment; music; nursing; pharmacy; and Social Welfare. The University offers more than 345 degree programs.

In the 2015 list, US News & World Report ranked KU as tied to a 106 between the National University and the 50th among public universities.

2014 US News & World Report rankings listed KU as 101 in the category of "national universities" and 47 among public universities. The US News & World Report's "Americas Best Graduate Schools" ranking has been ranked 49 KU program since 2008, 35 of which rank in the top 40 programs among public universities. The University is one of 62 members of the Association of American Universities.
